Inhouse product
The Impactor Coater IC 200i is an automated impaction surface coating system from Copley Scientific, built to apply reproducible surface coatings to both NGI Collection Cups and ACI Collection Plates. Manual coating of impactor collection surfaces is prone to variability and is labour-intensive; the IC 200i standardises the process, removing the inherent variability associated with manual coating while boosting laboratory throughput . The system coats surfaces in as little as 2 minutes. The specifications below cover the standard unit; trays, covers, and qualification documentation are selected separately.

Pre-installation Requirement:
Place the IC 200i on a level bench with clearance for the 590 x 320 mm footprint and access to all sides for loading trays. Position the pump where its tubing can reach the main unit without kinking. Connect the unit by USB A or USB B for control and data. If ACI plates are to be coated, fit the ACI Collection Plate Tray & Cups (Cat. No. 5933) and the appropriate cover and tubing set (Cat. No. 5941) before the first run. Confirm the solvent reservoir is connected and filled with the coating solution before starting a coating cycle.
Particle bounce and re-entrainment bias aerodynamic particle size distribution data toward finer sizes, particularly for dry powder inhalers and low-actuation metered dose inhalers. The pharmacopoeias recommend coating the impaction surfaces with a tacky material such as glycerol or silicone oil to address this, but manual coating introduces its own variability—the amount applied, its uniformity, and the method of application all affect the result .
The IC 200i automated impactor coating system standardises that step. The dispense rate is set from 0 to 100 %, and the dispense and reverse cycle runs from 0 to 10 minutes. The reverse cycle empties excess coating solution back into the reservoir, leaving a thin, consistent coating on each surface . Applied identically to every cup or plate in a study, the coating parameter stops being a source of analyst-to-analyst variation.
The two-minute coating time changes the workflow. Manual coating of a full NGI tray is a slow, careful task that occupies an analyst for the duration. With the IC 200i, the analyst loads the tray, starts the cycle, and steps away. The instrument frees the analyst for other work while it coats .
For buyers sourcing through OS4U, the configuration questions are whether NGI or ACI trays are needed (or both), whether IQ/OQ documentation is required for your quality system, and whether the solvent reservoir and spare tubing cassettes should be included in the initial order. The Copley Scientific IC 200i product page lists the current configuration options.
The IC 200i automated impactor coating system applies the set dispense rate and cycle time identically to every collection surface. The coating amount and uniformity do not depend on how an analyst dispensed by hand, which removes a known source of APSD variability.
A full tray of collection surfaces coats in about two minutes. The analyst loads the tray, starts the cycle, and is free for other tasks while the instrument works .
NGI Collection Cups and ACI Collection Plates are both compatible, with the appropriate tray and cover sets. A lab running both impactor formats does not need two coating systems.
The dispense and reverse cycle empties excess coating solution back into the reservoir for reuse. The result is a thin, consistent coating with minimal solution wastage .
The touchscreen interface simplifies operation, and USB A and USB B connectivity support data output and control. The coating parameters are set digitally rather than by manual adjustment.
IQ/OQ/PQ documentation and qualification tools are available for labs that need to qualify the instrument under GxP. Extended warranty options cover one or two additional years .
Struggling with inconsistent coating between analysts? The dispense rate and cycle time are set digitally and applied identically to every surface. The coating parameter does not depend on manual technique.
Losing analyst time to manual coating? The IC 200i coats in as little as two minutes, freeing the analyst for other work while the cycle runs. Manual coating occupies the analyst for the duration.
Worried about coating solution waste? The reverse cycle returns excess solution to the reservoir for reuse, leaving a thin, consistent coating with minimal wastage.
Running both NGI and ACI formats? One unit is compatible with both collection cup and plate formats, with the appropriate trays and cover sets.
Needing to qualify the instrument under GxP? IQ/OQ/PQ documentation and qualification tools are available as separate catalogue items, along with extended warranty options.
Needing to transfer methods between sites? Standardised coating parameters and digital settings make method transfer easier—the same dispense rate and cycle time can be applied at any site with an IC 200i .
